College to host marble-ous national event!

A popular marble and graining event that attracts people from across the UK is set to be hosted in Staffordshire.

The fifth Craft Awareness event will be staged at Stoke on Trent College from Friday May 2nd to Sunday May 4th in association with the Association of Painting Craft Teachers (APCT.) It is the only event of its kind in the UK.

The event is open to anybody with an interest in graining and marbling and will include demonstrations on how to achieve the technique and workshops from industry professionals.

Workshops will include stencilling, gilding, oak graining, mahogany, marbling sienna and Tromp L’Oeil.

Internationally acclaimed master craftsman Robert Woodland is amongst one of those who will be showcasing their talents. The painting and decorating professional, who will be delivering a master-class on the first day of the event, is known by royal appointment.

Pete Walters, Painting and Decorating Lecturer at Stoke on Trent College, said “This is an open event that people can come along to, pick up new skills or update existing ones and really have an opportunity to have a go at everything on offer.

It’s a key chance for local companies and individuals to participate in and up-skill with the help of key professionals from the industry.

In previous years the event has attracted tradespeople, students from across the UK, individuals involved in art and design, as well as general members of the public.”

A range of marbling and graining competitions will also be taking place and displayed during the event for visitors to enjoy. This will include the industry’s Graining and Marbling Olympix 2014.

The unique event has previously been hosted in Blackburn and Scotland. Students from colleges across the UK will also be in attendance.
Mr Walters added: “To have it staged at Stoke on Trent College is quite a coup and a chance for us to really show off our top-class facilities and expert links.”

The event is free to students or anyone with a valid student ID. A small fee will apply to other visitors.
