STUDENTS MAKING WAVES TO PROMOTE FITNESS

Students from City of Wolverhampton College are sticking their oars in to encourage a healthy lifestyle.

The group of 18 students who are all working towards qualifications in Public Services, Sport and Personal Training have been learning indoor water sports with British Canoeing and British Rowing.

Over a four week programme the group will learn skills in indoor canoeing and rowing, alongside a qualified Level 2 rowing coach, before using their new knowledge to run activity and fitness sessions for other students within the college.

Curriculum Manager Dan Clarke said: “This is a great opportunity for students to learn a new sport they might not otherwise have thought about trying. Once fully trained they will be able to go out and encourage participation in these activities by organising competitions and training sessions, gaining leadership skills that they can draw on in their future careers.”

The scheme is part of a joint up Team Watersports Program which was established by Chris Farrell, from British Rowing, and Ben Seal, from British Canoeing, and has helped develop canoeing and rowing opportunities in the Black Country.
