Apprentice shortlisted for National Book Industry Award

Apprentice, Jasmine has been shortlisted for a national book industry award

A Shrewsbury-based Apprentice has been shortlisted for the British Book Industry: HarperCollins, Young Retailer of the Year 2016 award.

20 year-old, Jasmine Denholm, from Shrewsbury, is currently working towards her Level 2 Apprenticeship in Retail at Shrewsbury College. Earlier this Year, Jasmine’s employer, Wenlock Books (in Much Wenlock), nominated her for the prestigious, national award.

The British Book Industry Awards celebrates the greatness of the British book trade and the people behind it – the best books, the best writers, the best bookshops, and the best publishers – from industry greats to those starting out.

The nominations were judged by 14 industry experts and just 6 people from across the country were shortlisted for this category – which celebrated exceptional and professional booksellers under 30.

“I’m so happy to have been shortlisted for this prestigious award!” Explained Jasmine. “I’m really excited for the awards ceremony as it will be amazing to be at such an important dinner with highly acclaimed booksellers, authors and publishers.

“The support that I’ve received during my apprenticeship has been wonderful and I feel so lucky to have been afforded such amazing opportunities by Wenlock Books.

Chris Crane, Apprentice Assessor at Shrewsbury College, said: “Jasmine has been a delightful student to work with. She is a natural retailer, and is in the perfect role for her personality and character.

She has worked hard to come up with many new initiatives for the store, and I was privileged to observe her recently at one of her initiatives; a Children’s book reading morning, where she demonstrated her natural affinity with the youngsters and their parents.

“Jasmine has worked very hard during her time at Wenlock Books and I am extremely proud of her achievements and wish her all the best at the award ceremony.”

The winner will be announced at The Bookseller Industry Awards next month (May) at Grosvenor House in London.
