A-level students from Rugby and Leamington heard from leading scientist and doctor, Lord Robert Winston, when he visited Royal Leamington Spa College last month.

Lord Winston is Professor of Science and Society and Emeritus Professor of Fertility Studies at Imperial College London and is also well-known for TV programmes such as Child of Our Time and The Human Body.

Over 100 students packed into the lecture theatre for the hour-long lecture where he talked about everything from his own career – including a short period working as a theatre director – to evolution, ethics, and the importance of scientific understanding. Lord Winston also took questions from the students on subjects such as genetic engineering and inspirational education.

Prior to his visit, the Rugby and Leamington students also raised money for the Genesis Research Trust, of which Lord Winston is chairman, through cake sales and a raffle. Students Katie Edwards and Rachel Barrett presented Lord Winston with the cheque after the event.

The Genesis Research Trust promotes better health for women and babies, and has raised £13 million to build and equip the most advanced research centre in Europe for Reproductive and Developmental Biology. The centre’s aim is to improve the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of a range of devastating conditions affecting women and their babies, including brain injury, miscarriage, infertility, cancer and genetic diseases.
Jean Hammonds, Director of Academic Studies at Warwickshire College Group, said, “We were honoured to welcome Lord Winston to the college. It was a fantastic experience for our students to hear about his career journey and his work as well as his thoughts about science and ethics – I’m sure it will inspire them in their studies.

“We were also delighted to present the cheque for the Genesis Research Trust – the students did an excellent job fundraising for this important charity. Lord Winston thanked everyone for the donation which he said will be extremely valuable for the Trust’s work promoting better health for women and babies.”
