A Walsall College Media Make-up student showcased her skill and creativity in the live final of the Jane Iredale National Student Make-up Competition and secured third place last week.
Level 3 student, Jodie Leah Griffiths, made it to the final after being selected from more than 200 entries received from beauty therapy and make-up students representing more than 100 colleges nationwide.
The theme of this year’s competition was ‘Make-up from Around the World’ and for the live final in London, aspiring make-up artists were tasked with creating their own interpretation of different cultures across the globe using the brand’s cosmetics.
Jodie took inspiration from the cherry blossom trees associated with an oriental theme for her look, which featured hair additions and bespoke costume as well as make up, which impressed judges and won her a four-day training make-up course with iiaa, UK and Ireland distributor for Jane Iredale make-up.
Jodie, 19, said: “Winning this award has given me recognition as an up-and-coming make-up artist and is such an amazing way to kick-start my career. It’s been a fantastic opportunity and experience and I feel really proud of my success.”
Judges included members of the Jane Iredale team from the headquarters in London. Finalists were scored on their interpretation of the theme, use of advanced techniques and overall look.
Curriculum Manager for Beauty at Walsall College, Joanne Small, said: “This is the first year we have run the Media Make-up course so to achieve success at a national level is unprecedented.
“This is great news for students enrolling on the course in September, as they can be assured they will be taught the relevant skills and techniques currently being used by professionals currently working in the industry.”
The Media Hair and Make-up course focuses on developing students’ artistic skills in applying make-up and body art. Students learn how to create a range of special effects used by make-up artists working in the exciting and growing TV, film and theatre industry.
