Marlena Matusik is due to start at De Montfort University in September thanks to the tuition she received on the College’s ESOL course

A student on Stratford-upon-Avon College’s English For Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) programme is ready to embark on university life having made breath-taking progress under the tuition she received on her course.

Marlena Matusik, originally from Poland but now living in Stratford-upon-Avon,  has just passed the College’s ESOL Entry 3 programme with flying colours and is due to enrol at De Montfort University in Leicester this September to study Business Management.

Marlena joined the ESOL programme last September, having just moved to the UK with very limited English. “When I arrived, I only knew a few phrases.  I could say hello and goodbye and maybe ask the time but that’s about it.”  Attending class twice a week, Marlena’s studious attitude and determination to progress to university saw her English flourish at an astonishing rate and she is now fluent in spoken and written English.  “My lecturers Judith Page and Anne Ward were so helpful.  We learnt about vocabulary and grammar and how to hold conversations on all sorts of topics.  The course was very beneficial; there’s no way I could be progressing to university without it.”

With her post-university life already planned out, Marlena intends to go on to study a Diploma in Logistics before moving into employment.

Marlena became interested in the organisation behind manufacturing and transportation as a child when she used to listen to stories of her uncle’s experience working as a lorry driver.  “He used to travel all over Europe and I was fascinated by what he got up to and the places he had travelled. And I learnt that a job in logistics can be quite well paid!”

Anne is thrilled with Marlena’s achievement. “It’s always so satisfying whenever we see our students excel like this.  Knowing that we’ve progressed Marlena to a point at which she is able to attend a UK university and chase her career aspirations is such a thrill and the progress she has made in just one year is truly outstanding. Her success is exactly why we do this job.”

Having grown so fond of the local area, Marlena has no plans to move away from Stratford however. She intends to commute over 100 miles each day to complete her studies.  “All my friends are here so I wouldn’t want to move away.  This is home for me.”
