Heart of Worcestershire College’s (HoW College) Sport students received a “knock-out” presentation from Chris Connelly, Head Performance Analyst for Great Britain (GB) Boxing, on Friday 20th January 2017.
Currently working with some of the biggest names in elite sport, and fresh from his time at the Rio Olympics, Chris gave the students an insight into his life working for the English Institute of Sport (EIS).
EIS is the country’s largest provider of sport science, medicine and technology. EIS practitioners, like Chris, help coaches and Performance Directors to improve the performance of their athletes by delivering services which enable them to optimise training programmes, maximise performance in competition and improve their health and wellbeing.
Speaking to the students, Chris reflected on his time in the sports industry and highlighted the importance of gaining work experience alongside their studies. Having an impressive portfolio himself, Chris, built his career through completing both voluntary and internship programmes with a host of companies including Stoke City FC and the England Handball League.
Now living the dream, Chris is working with numerous elite athletes and travelling all across the world from Russia to South Korea.
Speaking about the presentation, Chris said:
“As the Head Performance Analyst for Great Britain Boxing and the English Institute of Sport it is vital for us to help students to achieve their goals, in order to develop the next generation of sport scientists. Heart of Worcestershire College is a fantastic place for the students to learn and grow as sport practitioners and it was a pleasure to see such enthusiasm from them.”
James Thorne, HND Sport Leader and Lecturer, commented:
“Having Chris come in and speak to the students has been a fantastic experience for them. He has given them a real insight into the work he is doing with elite athletes and hopefully given them a taste for the opportunities available to them once they finish their course here at college.”
HND Sport Student Lewis Walker added:
“Chris gave us a real insight into performance analysis and what is needed to have a successful career working in elite sport.”
