Former student, Brad French, served up a storm as he paid a visit to Level 2 Hospitality and Catering students at Heart of Worcestershire College (HoW College) on Monday 23rd January 2017.

Brad, who attended the former North East Worcestershire College (NEW College) now HoW College, studied a BTEC Extended Diploma in Hospitality. Alongside his studies, he also attended a work placement at the prestigious, 4-star, Alveston Manor in Stratford-upon-Avon. On completion he secured a job at the company and since then his career has continued to “heat-up”. Currently working as a Senior Sous Chef at the Falcon Hotel, Brad certainly knows the recipe for success.

Returning to the College Brad delivered a culinary masterclass to current students who are about to undertake their first work placement.

Talking about the experience, Brad said:

“It was great to have the opportunity to come back to the College and meet some of the students who are in the same position as I was five years ago. My work placement gave me the opportunity to break into the industry and built my confidence as a chef. I wouldn’t be in the same position today if it wasn’t for the support of the staff at the College. I hope today has given the students the motivation to reach outside of their comfort zones and really embrace their upcoming placements.”

Level 2 Hospitality and Catering student, Chris Duckworth, commented:

“It has been great meeting Brad and listening to his experiences within the catering industry. It has shown us what we can do and achieve when we finish our college course.”

Hospitality and Catering Lecturer, Matthew Perry, added:

“It was fantastic having Brad come in and talk to the level 2 students about his career so far. The students are in the process of sourcing their first work placements so it is great for them to engage with someone who has been through the process before. Brad’s demonstration really showcased what the students can achieve and opened them up to the potential progression routes available to them in the future.”

More and more employers are looking for experience as well as academic credentials. A work placement gives students the opportunity to gain valuable experience spending time working for an employer and carrying out duties or tasks as any other employee of the company would.  HoW College has excellent links with local employers and encourages all students to undertake a work placement alongside their study.
